Vol. 465 No. 8

Written Answers. - Westport (Mayo) Unemployment.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

91 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the measures, if any, he proposes to take in order to address the rise in unemployment in the Westport area of County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10656/96]

The Mayo partnership area as one of the twelve original partnership areas has been approved for the establishment of a local employment service network.

A plan for the establishment of the local employment service network has been submitted and approved. The implementation of this plan is now in process and the establishment of the first centres in Ballina and Castlebar will take place in June/July 1996. The network will extend to cover the Westport area, where it is proposed to establish contact points and to operate clinics.

The full range of services covered by the local employment service network will be available to the unemployed in the Westport area.

The county enterprise board, IDA-Ireland and Forbairt are working on an ongoing basis to attract jobs into the county. The local employment service will be working with these bodies to ensure that the unemployed are considered for all available employment opportunities.
