Vol. 465 No. 8

Written Answers. - BSE Monitoring.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

97 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry whether he intends establishing a monitoring and inspection task force to deal on an ongoing basis with farms that have had BSE. [10471/96]

As the Deputy is aware, my Department's policy in cases where a BSE case is confirmed is to depopulate the herds on these farms and the carcasses are rendered.

Routine monitoring of such farms is carried out when repopulation takes place. As BSE is not an infectious disease, there is no additional risk as far as BSE is concerned in the case of farms on which a case of BSE has previously been recorded. Consequently, I do not consider it necessary to establish a specific task force to deal with farms on which a case of BSE has been confirmed.
