Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fifth Action Programme.

John Ellis

Question:

112 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment the submissions, if any, he has made to the EU for consideration at the review stage of the Fifth Action Programme towards sustainability. [10799/96]

A progress report for the purposes of the Fifth Action Programme on the Environment, Towards Sustainability, was prepared by the European Commission during 1995. My Department supported this work by arranging for meetings between representatives of the Commission and relevant Irish Government Departments to discuss progress under the various areas of the fifth programme. In addition, my Department supplied further information and documentation to the Commission.

Following the publication last January of the progress report, the Commission has presented a proposal for formal decision by the Council and the European Parliament on the review of the Fifth Action Programme. I intend to give a high priority to the advancement of this proposal during the forthcoming Irish Presidency.
