Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Cork School.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

138 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education when building of a second-level school (details supplied) in County Cork will commence; and when student intake will commence. [10756/96]

The architectural planning of this project has now been completed. Tenders were submitted recently from County Cork Vocational Education Committee for the new community college and are currently being examined by my Department's technical staff. When the tenders have been examined and approved, the question of placing the contract for the building work will then arise.

I am conscious of the urgent need for post-primary accommodation in the area in question and I would like to assure the Deputy that every effort is being made by County Cork Vocational Education Committee and the Department to have construction of the college initiated as soon as possible.

It is not possible at this stage to indicate when student intake will commence, as this depends on when construction commences and also the length of the construction period which can be affected by various factors.
