Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - Students' Summer Jobs Scheme.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

194 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will review the case of a person (details supplied) in County Donegal who wishes to avail of the student summer jobs scheme. [10922/96]

The students' summer jobs scheme provides income support for the less well-off third level students who are disqualified from claiming unemployment assistance and unable to obtain summer work.

One of the qualifying conditions for the scheme is that students must be 18 years of age or older on 1 June 1996 when the scheme commences. This relates to the fact that persons aged under 18 years are disqualified from claiming unemployment assistance. I am examining ways of facilitating participation in the scheme by students from the date they reach 18 years where this arises during the course of the scheme. I am having the eligibility of the person concerned examined in the light of the other qualifying conditions and I will communicate with the Deputy shortly.
