Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Mayo FÁS Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

74 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo who is on a FAS scheme has been taxed to the extent that she has to give up the scheme and return to unemployment assistance. [10985/96]

It is not possible, based on the information provided, to say why the person in question would claim unemployment assistance rather than continuing on a FÁS scheme.

The interaction of the tax and social welfare systems, and the difficulties this can throw up for those on lower incomes either moving into work or seeking to improve their net take-home pay while in work, is of particular concern to the Government and in my last two budgets I have introduced a number of measures to help alleviate the problem.

If the Deputy can provide further details of the case I can have it examined to see if the particular problem can be isolated.
