Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Veterinary Nurses.

Noel Ahern

Question:

260 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his policy in relation to the position of veterinary nurse which is a qualification with City and Guilds recognition; the reasons his Department will not recognise this qualification and give official status, standing and recognition to the profession; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11377/96]

The Veterinary Surgeon Acts, 1931 to 1960, regulate the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and restrict such practices to registered veterinary surgeons. Accordingly, it is not possible to give official recognition or approval to veterinary nurses to engage in such practices.

The legislation governing veterinary activities is being examined by my Department at the present time with a view to preparing updated legislation. This review will inter alia deal with the position of veterinary nurses.
