Vol. 466 No. 6

Written Answers. - EU Poverty IV Programme.

Joe Walsh

Question:

128 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is in a position to report progress on the current status of the EU Poverty IV Programme. [12166/96]

I refer the Deputy to the answer I gave to Question No. 8 on 3 April 1996. The situation remains unchanged.

In addition, the Deputy may wish to note that within the context of the Intergovernmental Conference, Ireland will be seeking a treaty change in the area of social exclusion in order to enhance the ability of the Union to tackle the whole issue of poverty. It is in this way that the Government hopes to highlight the need for action in the area of social exclusion at European level.
