Vol. 466 No. 7

Written Answers. - Exclusion Zone.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

58 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether an exclusion zone is being declared around the United States aircraft carrier due to visit Dublin in July 1996; if so, if any such exclusion zone will be within Ireland's territorial waters; the body/organisation that will police the zone; if any such zone will be regarded as United States territory; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12241/96]

An exclusion zone of 300 metres, determined by the competent Irish authorities, will be in force around the USS John F. Kennedy from 2 to 7 July, to ensure the safe embarkation and disembarkation of all passengers. I understand that Notices to Mariners, to that effect, have been issued by the relevant harbour authorities. The Garda Síochána, assisted by the Irish Naval Service, will be responsible for the exclusion zone in question which remains part of Ireland's territorial waters.
