Vol. 466 No. 8

Written Answers. - Effects of Chemicals on Fertility.

Tom Kitt

Question:

81 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the possibility of infertility caused by chemicals in certain baby formula products; and the action, if any, he proposes to take in respect of this matter. [12434/96]

I am aware that the recent reports on phthalates in baby milks referred to the possible effects of these substances on fertility, especially among males.

My Department, in conjunction with the Food Safety Advisory Board, has reviewed the available data relating to the survey carried out by the Food Safety Directorate of the UK Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on the levels of phthalates in baby milks on sale in the UK. As part of this review, the levels recorded for the two types of phthalates thought to have oestrogenic effects were considered. All the available information suggests that the levels are so low as not to pose a risk to health.

Despite the reassurance offered by this information, and having regard to the understandable public concern about the issue, my Department has asked the health boards to arrange to have samples of baby milks on sale in Ireland analysed. The Food Safety Advisory Board will review the results, when available, and will be asked to advise on any action deemed necessary.

My Department is, meanwhile, keeping the matter under continuous review.
