Vol. 466 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Galway Bridge Project.

Robert Molloy

Question:

84 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a report from Galway County Council regarding the proposed Knockferry Killbeg bridge project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10282/96]

An application was received from Galway County Council in December 1994, under the EU co-financed scheme, for a grant of £75,000 to carry out a feasibility study to evaluate this project. The project was not selected for funding in 1995 and the council did not put forward an application for funding in 1996.

It is open to the council to consider whether to resubmit the proposal for funding in 1997 under the EU co-financed grants scheme. The selection of projects under this scheme is made on the basis of compliance with the strict EU eligibility criteria governing the scheme, the priority attaching to different projects, the needs of different areas and the limited funds available. In this connection, I am advised that a recent review of this project, carried out on behalf of the county council, concluded that the project cannot be considered economically feasible.
