Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - VAT Collection.

Noel Ahern

Question:

108 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to introduce a commission or some other incentive system, or to pay the accounting and the administration costs, such as those associated with VAT collection on behalf of the Revenue Commissioners, to retailers in view of the high costs associated with such work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12867/96]

I have no plans to introduce a commission or other system to pay the accounting or administrative costs incurred by businesses when remitting taxes to the Revenue Commissioners. I should explain, however, that the Commissioners have set the minimisation of taxpayers' compliance costs as a priority objective and action by them in that regard is ongoing. The Deputy will be interested to know that a considerable number of measures have already been taken to achieve that objective and details of those measures were recently made available by the Commissioners in a submission to the Joint Committee on Small Business and Services. I have arranged to send a copy of that submission to the Deputy.
