Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youth Service Bill.

Brendan Smith

Question:

60 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, that has been made in relation to the preparation of the youth service Bill; the interest groups that have been consulted; when this legislation will be published; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12589/96]

Satisfactory progress has been made in relation to the preparation of the youth service Bill. My Department has consulted with the main interest groups, including the youth organisations, the local voluntary youth councils and the relevant Vocational Education Committee. I expect that the Government will be in a position to consider the Heads of the youth service Bill in the very near future. Following clearance by the Government of the Heads, the matter will be referred to the Parliamentary Draftsman to draft the Bill. I hope to have the Bill published before the end of the year.
