Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Voluntary Youth Organisations.

Brendan Smith

Question:

80 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education the organisations, if any, that she has consulted with in relation to the establishment of a single representative body for the national voluntary youth organisations; the progress, if any, that has been made in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12588/96]

My Department has discussed the creation of a single representative body for the national voluntary youth organisations with the National Youth Council of Ireland, the National Youth Federation, Foróige and the Catholic Youth Council. As stated in the Education White Paper issued in April 1995, my Department considers that the clear articulation of the youth work needs of young people can be best facilitated through such a single representative body. Accordingly, the participation by all youth organisations in a single representative body has been encouraged. In addition, it is my intention to secure the representation of national voluntary youth organisations on the proposed National Youth Work Advisory Committee through such a single representative body.
