Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Vegetable Testing.

John Ellis

Question:

151 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry whether his Department undertakes tests in relation to organo phosphate pesticide residues in imported vegetables; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12988/96]

My Department undertakes sampling and analysis of imports of vegetables for residues of pesticides. In 1995, 78 samples of imported vegetable produce were analysed and in one sample taken from a consignment of melons from Costa Rica residues of organo phosphorous pesticides above prescribed limits set under national legislation were found. Under EC classification melons are regarded as fruiting vegetables.
