Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Deployment of Garda Manpower.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

65 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to provide greater resources for rural Garda stations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12910/96]

The allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. In deploying resources to the best possible advantage they take many factors into consideration such as population, demographic change, crime trends and other matters which affect the maintenance of law and order. The demand for Garda services varies from division to division and from district to district, and Garda resources are adjusted and targeted to meet these demands. Crime trends and factors which determine the allocation of personnel resources are carefully monitored on an ongoing basis.

I am satisfied that the Garda authorities are making optimum use of available Garda resources.

Chris Flood

Question:

66 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Justice the number of Gardaí currently engaged in non-policing duties; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12892/96]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas. They have informed me that there are approximately 400 gardaí engaged on clerical/administrative type duties at any one time. While the members occupying these positions are not generally involved in operational duties many of the positions do have some requirement to carry out duties which could not be performed by civilians.
