Written Answers. - Garda Annual Report.

John Browne

Question:

67 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Justice when she intends to publish the Garda Commissioner's report for 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12881/96]

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

82 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to establish a criminological statistics bureau to facilitate informed planning and decision-making; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12841/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 67 and 82 together.

Statistical information in relation to crime is collected by the Garda. The crime statistical office, which is attached to Garda headquarters, assists in the publication of the Commissioner's annual report on crime and also produces statistical reports to support planning and decision making at central and local level. The new Garda information technology system will, when fully operational, enhance the recording of criminal statistics and enable additional use to be made of the data.

The annual report for 1995 has been submitted by the Garda to my Department and it will be published shortly — copies will be circulated to all Members of the Oireachtas.
