Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Dog Unit.

M. J. Nolan

Question:

69 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to establish additional Garda dog units in appropriate Garda stations throughout the country. [12909/96]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources. I understand from them that the Garda dog unit, which is based at Kilmainham garda station, is staffed by one sergeant and 11 gardaí. Although based in Dublin, the Garda dog unit is, of course, a national unit.

I have been informed that the operation of the Garda dog unit is currently being reviewed by the Garda authorities. It would be preferable to await the outcome of this review before any decisions are made on the question of additional Garda dog units.
