Vol. 467 No. 5

Written Answers. - Youth Progression Programme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

115 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the progress, if any, made with the special measures for 18 and 19 year olds as announced in the budget; if he will give details of the youth progression programme; the total cost of this programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13754/96]

The special measures for 18 to 19 year olds announced in this year's budget are due to commence in the autumn. These measures will be designed to encourage young persons who are more than six months unemployed into the labour market and to prevent them from drifting into prolonged dependence on the live register. The programme will initially cater for 500 young persons and will include measures such as counselling, training and provision of employment opportunities to meet the individual needs of those participating in the programme.

Discussions are ongoing between my Department. FÁS and the Department of Social Welfare in regard to the implementation of these measures which will be financed from within the FÁS mainline training budget.
