Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Donegal Sewerage Schemes.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

157 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Environment when the last sewerage scheme commenced in County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14180/96]

Annagry sewerage scheme, which commenced in 1989 and was completed in 1991, was the last major sewerage scheme commenced in County Donegal. However, there is now a substantial investment programme under way for the provision of sewerage schemes in the county. Schemes for Muff and Ballybofey-Stranorlar have been included in the programme for 1996 and are scheduled to commence later this year. Funding has also been approved in 1996 for a scheme in Bundoran. A major scheme, for which Cohesion Fund support was received at the end of 1995, has also been approved for Letterkenny. Support has been sought from the Cohesion Fund for a number of other sewerage schemes in the county, including Donegal town, and decision on these are awaited from the European Commission.

County Donegal has been a major beneficiary of the substantial investment in the water and sewerage programme over recent years, accounting for expenditure of almost £2 million from 1993 to 1995. Further investment in major projects in the county, including the £27 million Pollan Dam water scheme, is ongoing.
