Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

182 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding a remedial mathematics teacher (details supplied) at a primary school in a disadvantaged area who has held the post for the 1995-96 school year, but has not been officially sanctioned and therefore cannot attend relevant training courses. [13954/96]

The school in question already has the full-time services of a remedial teacher. However, I understand that as part of a local arrangement, an assistant teacher at the school has also been deployed as a remedial mathematics teacher.

The national programme of training in remedial education for teachers of first and second level pupils is available only to teachers in permanent posts, who are fully probated and are currently employed as teachers in officially designated remedial teacher posts. As the teacher in question is not currently employed in such a capacity, it would not be possible for her to attend the course.
I regret that it is not possible at present to make a further remedial teacher available to this school.
