Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Oil Exploration Programmes.

Robert Molloy

Question:

417 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications whether he has received a report on oil exploration activities undertaken in 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14201/96]

Exploration programmes are carried out under authorisations granted to petroleum exploration companies. In accordance with the requirements of these authorisations exploration companies keep my Department informed on a regular basis of all developments in regard to their exploration activities. This year one exploration well has been drilled so far by Enterprise Oil plc in block 27/5 in the Slyne Trough west of Achill Island. Drilling of this well was completed on 11 June 1996. Enterprise Oil plc is currently drilling a second well in block 18/20 in the Slyne Trough west of Belmullet. A number of exploration surveys are currently under way in the Irish offshore and more surveys are planned to take place later in the year.
