Written Answers. - Tractor Registration Statistics.

Question:

54 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance the number of new agricultural and general haulage tractors first registered in each county during the period 1 January 1996 to 31 May 1996 and in respect of each of the years from 1993 to 1995; if he will authorise the agents of the Revenue Commissioners, each relevant local authority, to provide this information on written request in the absence of county by county information; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners, who maintain the register of all vehicles in the State, that a breakdown on a county by county basis is only available in respect of all agricultural tractors, i.e. both new and used vehicles. The Commissioners do not maintain a county by county record of new agricultural tractors only nor of general haulage tractors. The retrieval of the additional data requested would involve a reprogramming of the mainframe computer which would be time consuming and costly. The available information is shown on the following schedule.

The local authorities which are mentioned in the Deputy's question are not the agents of the Revenue Commissioners and I am informed that the records kept by them are in respect of tractors which are licensed for road tax purposes.
