Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Armada Artefacts.

Edward Nealon

Question:

282 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the proposals, if any, he has for the excavation, preservation and protection of the Armada artefacts found off Streedagh Strand, Grange, County Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15134/96]

The State's claim to ownership of the Spanish Armada wrecks and artefacts, off Streedagh, County Sligo, has been affirmed as a result of High Court and Supreme Court judgements. However, some matters are still the subject of litigation.

The drivers, who initiated the litigation, have continued to carry out a non-invasive survey of the site under licence and supervision of the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service of my Department.

Until such time as the current litigation has been concluded, my Department's resources will be concentrated on the protection and preservation of the wrecks and their artefacts in situ.
