Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - H.Dip Programme.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

451 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education if she will insist that all persons who are taking the H.Dip programme will have as a compulsory aspect of the course the ceard teastas gaeilge. [15266/96]

All second level teachers are required to have a competent knowledge of the Irish language. The Registration Council for Secondary Teachers requires that an applicant for registration must produce evidence of this competence. Evidence can be afforded by tests carried out by either the Department of Education or by an Irish university, a representative of the Department being associated with the university's examiner for this purpose. The ceard teastas Gaeilge or an equivalent qualification is required for the purpose of appointment as a full-time permanent teacher in a vocational education committee or community or comprehensive school.
