Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

500 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, she is taking to ensure that the amalgamation of two schools in Moville, County Donegal, is completed on time for the commencement of the 1996/1997 academic year, to the satisfaction of parents, teachers and students in view of the fact that costings were to take place as a matter of urgency in early May and it is now the end of July and no repairs or building have commenced. [15584/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 478 and 500 together. The chairperson of the boards of management of the boys' and girls' national schools in Moville, County Donegal have informed the Department that agreement has been reached locally on the amalgamation of both schools. A report on the condition of St. Joseph's boys' school has been received within my Department. Clarification on certain aspects of this report has been sought together with a request for details of the condition of St. Brigid's girls' school. When this information is to hand, my Department will be in a better position to determine, both economically and educationally, how best the amalgamation process can be facilitated. At this point, I am unable to indicate a time-scale or costing for any necessary works.

The school management was advised of the position in a letter on 9 July last.
