Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Micheál Martin

Question:

489 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education when she intends to give a full and comprehensive reply to correspondence dated 18 June 1996, from a parent of a 1996 leaving certificate honours student (details supplied) in Dublin 9 regarding the marking of the 1996 leaving certificate honours paper II. [15521/96]

Micheál Martin

Question:

490 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the way in which the error in the 1996 leaving certificate honours examination paper II is being dealt with by examiners; and if full credit will be given to students for Part C of the question irrespective of whether they began or finished that particular section of the question. [15522/96]

I propose to reply to Questions Nos. 489 and 490 together.

As I stated on 25 June last in reply to a previous question, the original marking scheme for question 4 (c) of the Leaving Certificate Higher Level Mathematics Paper (II) examination has been adapted. Examiners have been instructed to accept either the value of the angle as indicated on the paper or the value of the angle — which may be obtained from observation of the diagram — in the formula. Where an attempt has been made, due allocation of marks has been given subject to the usual deductions as indicated on the marking scheme. Where a candidate has stated that there is a problem with the question, full marks has been given. I should add that I have been advised that question 4 (c) was very popular and well answered and that there were only two cases — out of a total of 10,500 candidates — where the candidate stated that there was a problem with the question. I am arranging to have the above information forwarded to the correspondent referred to by the Deputy.
