Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Noel Treacy

Question:

545 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education the reason proper and equitable school transport is not being made available to a group (details supplied) in County Galway; if she will now implement the commitment given to the parents of these children by a Minister of State at her Department earlier in 1996; if so, the date on which this will be done; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16026/96]

The location of the morning pick-up point in this case differs from the set-down point in the evening. However, the level of service available to the pupils to whom the Deputy refers is well within my Department's guidelines.

A request to extend this service to further accommodate the children in question was refused by my Department last year, due to timetable constraints.

It was agreed at a meeting earlier this year to investigate the possibility of making an alternative extension to the evening service. However, Bus Éireann confirmed that, for operational reasons, it would not be possible to extend the service under any circumstances.
