Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Security Measures.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

674 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the implications, if any, for security of the bombing in Enniskillen caused by a jeep stolen in the Republic and the bomb hoax in Dublin on 18 July 1996; if she has received a full Garda report on both incidents; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15805/96]

The implications of the incidents in question are that security measures must continue to be taken throughout this island to counter the use or threat of use of paramilitary violence. I received a detailed briefing on these incidents, and the security situation generally, from the Garda authorities. They assured me that all worth-while security measures are in place to deal with incidents of this nature.

At the same time, the incidents referred to in the question, and other recent incidents of paramilitary violence in this and other jurisdictions, have highlighted once again the horror of violence pursued for political ends and the need for the Governments and all parties to work earnestly and urgently for the achievement of a lasting political solution.
