Question:730 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Social Welfare if a person (details supplied) in County Cork is entitled to participate in the student summer job scheme. [15225/96]
Vol. 468 No. 4
730 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Social Welfare if a person (details supplied) in County Cork is entitled to participate in the student summer job scheme. [15225/96]
The underlying purpose of the scheme is to provide income support for less well off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and are unable to obtain summer work. Priority, therefore, is being given to enable the maximum number of eligible low income students to participate within the overall financial allocation of £10.2 million for the 1996 scheme.
731 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the fact that an application for the student summer jobs scheme has been made by a person (details supplied) in County Wexford which was refused in spite of the fact that this student is in continuing third level education and that when she inquired in this regard she was told to apply for unemployment assistance; his views on whether this student should be paid to work in view of the fact that his Department funds unemployment assistance payments; if he will reconsider his decision in this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15245/96]
732 Mr.
