Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Extension of Salmon Season.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

988 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for the Marine if he will allow an extension of the salmon fishing season by an extra two weeks beyond the closing date of 31 July 1996 in the Waterford estuary in view of the difficulties caused in 1996 due to a plague of jellyfish which has totally ruined the season; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15511/96]

It has not been the practice in recent years, nor would it be in accord with established policy objectives, to extend drift netting seasons. As regards the particular area mentioned by the Deputy, I would point out that the salmon drift net fishermen along the south coast already have the benefit of a lengthy season which has been in place since 1980 and extends from 15 March until 31 July each year. While I sympathise with any difficulties arising, no change in the season is proposed.
