Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bantry (Cork) Hospital.

Joe Walsh

Question:

253 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Health if he will have arrangements made for the provision of a new barium X-ray machine to a hospital (details supplied) in County Cork. [16831/96]

Limerick East): Over the past few weeks the Southern Health Board has been in discussion with officials from my Department following the breakdown of equipment in the screening room at Bantry hospital. Following a technical appraisal of the problem by the board, in association with the Department's hospital planning office, it has been agreed that the equipment must be replaced as a matter of urgency.

At the Department's request, the board has recently submitted detailed information regarding the replacement requirements. In its submission the board confirmed that, in view of the gravity of the problem and its implications for the operation of Bantry hospital, this is now the board's top priority item for capital equipment replacement. The Deputy will wish to know that my Department has now conveyed formal approval to a capital grant towards the replacement of this priority equipment, subject to compliance with standard Department procedures for purchasing equipment. In the interim, arrangements are being made to treat Bantry patients at Cork University Hospital.
