Mary Wallace

Question:

295 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the current status of the report of the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities and the Council for the Status of People with Disabilities. [16901/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 290 and 295 together.

I am informed that the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities is close to finalising its recommendations and expect to present its report to me shortly.

I understand that the establishment group, whose task is to facilitate the setting up of the interim Council for the Status of People with Disabilities, is currently engaged in meeting with all newly elected/selected representatives of each of the recently established county networks. It intends to hold four regional conferences in November 1996, at which the national board of the Council for the Status of People with Disabilities will be elected. The official launch of the interim council is due to take place early in 1997.
