Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Transport Services' Accessibility

Mary Wallace

Question:

664 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the nature and extent of all actions taken by his Department to increase the accessibility of transport services for people with mobility problems. [16904/96]

The introduction of improvements in the accessibility of transport services is essentially a matter for transport providers and others directly involved in the transport chain rather than for my Department. The transport industry is aware that it is my policy that it should seek to achieve the highest degree of accessibility possible within available resources. An Inter-Departmental Transport Accessibility Committee chaired by my Department exists to facilitate the implementation of that policy, and I have given the House an indication of progress to date on a number of occasions, most recently in my Question No. 40 on 28 May 1996.
