Vol. 469 No. 2

Written Answers. - Ethical Guidelines.

Máirín Quill

Question:

79 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to lay down guidelines on embryo freezing in view of the fact that an English clinic is planning to introduce this practice in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17129/96]

Limerick East): All medical practice in Ireland is governed by the ethical guidelines of the Medical Council. In relation to in-vitro fertilisation, the Medical Council has approved the guidelines issued by the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. Under these guidelines, the freezing of embryos is not permitted.
