Vol. 469 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Noel Davern

Question:

104 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Education the reason pupils from the Skeheenarinka area of County Tipperary who attend secondary school in Mitchelstown, County Cork continue to be collected first each morning and are returned home last each evening in view of her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 91 on Wednesday, 6 March 1996. [17041/96]

Pupils from the Skenheenarinka area of County Tipperary who attend secondary school in Mitchelstown are not subject to the operation of a double trip in the morning. The school bus from that area operates a single trip only and arrives in Mitchelstown at 8.45 a.m. These pupils continue to be returned home on a double trip in the afternoon as the bus concerned has to first operate a shorter route.

In reply to Parliamentary Question No. 91 on that date, I indicated that there would be a change in double-tripping arrangements for pupils on transport in the Michelstown area on an annual rotation basis. For effective operational reasons it has not been possible to rotate the evening double trip arrangement for pupils from the Skeheenarinka area. However, pupils in this area are still regarded as having an excellent level of service in the overall context of the school transport scheme.
