Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - Non-Payment of Grant.

Micheál Martin

Question:

143 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Meath has not received a higher education grant for her second year in a BA communications course at Dublin City University in view of the fact that she received correspondence (details supplied) confirming that she would receive such a grant; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17412/96]

The correspondence referred to by the Deputy was based on the understanding that the student in question had only completed one year of study with grant aid on her previous course. It now appears from recent representations from the student and consultation with Meath County Council that she had already pursued two years of study with grant aid. Under the terms of the student support schemes a grant is not payable in respect of a second period of attendance at any particular level regardless of whether the first period was grant aided. In the circumstances the student in question is ineligible for grant aid until she has completed two years of her new course.
