Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - EU Presidency Staff.

Ivor Callely

Question:

18 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons employed by him on a full-time, part-time and contract basis for the duration of the Irish Presidency of the EU; the total costs involved in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17222/96]

Two additional temporary posts were created within the Department to deal with work arising out of the Presidency. These posts were filled by existing serving officers. The estimated cost of these posts, which will exist up to the end of December, will be £35,631.

In addition, three additional temporary posts on secondment from the Department to the Permanent Representation to the European Communities were created for the duration of Ireland's Presidency of the EU. The cost for these posts, including the normal foreign service allowances payable, is estimated at £120,365.

The extra workload in relation to the Presidency was otherwise handled by existing officers working in the relevant areas and by additional resources loaned from other areas.
