Vol. 469 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

50 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if she will appoint a member of the Garda Síochána to serve in a village (details supplied) in County Cork; and if this member will take up residence in the village. [17563/96]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed deployment of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas. They have informed me that there is one garda allocated to the station in question and he resides within a distance of two miles from the station. The area is policed as part of the community policing initiative in operation in the Midleton district and is also subject to regular patrols by the district mobile units.

The Garda authorities inform me that while members of the force are encouraged to reside in, or close to, the districts in which they work, there are no regulations to compel gardaí to reside in the particular town or village concerned.

The Garda authorities are satisfied that the current policing arrangements for the area in question are satisfactory but they will keep them under constant review.
