Vol. 469 No. 6

Written Answers. - Funding for Offshore Islands.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

26 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of all moneys allocated under the Special Envelope for the Islands announced in 1996, broken down by project and by county. [17198/96]

The report of the Interdepartmental Co-ordinating Committee on Island Development clearly identifies and addresses the long-term issues affecting the communities on our offshore islands. As Chairman of the Co-ordinating Committee, my colleague, Deputy Donal Carey, is responsible for co-ordinating the Government's response to the recommendations of the report. Minister Carey recently visited a number of offshore islands. He held meetings with island communities and saw at first hand the priority access issues to be addressed.

The development of access services to our offshore islands was identified in the report as the priority issue and the Government made available an additional £1 million in 1996 specifically for this purpose.

Prioritised programmes of work submitted by the relevant local authorities have been assessed by the Interdepartmental Co-ordinating Committee and recommendations regarding funding were subsequently made. Minister Carey recently advised Galway, Donegal and Mayo County Councils of funding for projects included in their programmes of work. He expects to be in a position shortly to confirm funding to Cork County Council on receipt of details of its priority access projects. Details of all the projects which received funding will be circulated in the Official Report.
As Deputies will see, a total of £242,250 has been made available to the relevant local authorities to date for projects submitted to the co-ordinating committee. Decisions regarding a number of other projects submitted in the programmes of work are still under consideration and Minister Carey hopes to be in a position shortly to announce further funding from the financial envelope.
