Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Clerical Workers.

Peter Barry

Question:

248 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice the number of clerical workers currently employed by the Garda Síochána; the way in which this total compares with the totals for each of the years 1985 and 1990; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18488/96]

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows:

Year

Number of clerical/administrative staff serving

1985

428

1990

507

1996

684 on 30 September.

In the context of the anti-crime measures decided upon by the Government on 2 July, 1996 an additional 200 civilians will be recruited by early 1997 to enable an equivalent number of gardaí to be released from clerical/administrative type duties to operational Garda duties. Procedures for the appointment of these personnel are in train.
