Ray Burke

Question:

66 Mr. R. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will intervene with the Ethiopian Government on behalf of a student (details supplied) who disappeared on the night of 10 November 1995, in Addis Ababa and who is reportedly held in secret detention in Mailekawi Prison in Addis Ababa. [18890/96]

Despite the significant improvement in human rights in Ethiopia since the overthrow of the Mengistu regime in 1991, the Government continues to have concerns, which are shared by our EU partners, about the development of democracy and the human rights situation in Ethiopia

These concerns are conveyed to the Ethiopian authorities through our embassy in Addis Ababa as part of the European Union's ongoing dialogue with Ethiopia on human rights issues. The case referred to by the Deputy will be raised within the existing arrangements which are in place for dealing with such human rights issues. The Government will continue to monitor this and similar human rights cases in Ethiopia along with our European partners.
