Vol. 470 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Employment Service.

Bertie Ahern

Question:

44 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment whether he will report on the work of the advisory group on the local employment service. [19417/96]

I take it that the Deputy is referring to the interdepartmental advisory group on the local employment service. This group is composed of representatives of the Departments of the Taoiseach, Enterprise and Employment, Social Welfare, Education, Finance, Office of the Tánaiste, FÁS and ADM Ltd. It has met 12 times since it was established under Government Decision S.28454 of 14 February 1995.

The group has advised me in regard to a wide range of issues relating to the establishment of the local employment service, including: the 14 LES areas' plans, special education and training fund for tailor-made career path planning, training and progression and LES staff training and other operational issues arising as the service gets under way.

I have also established a policy advisory committee on the LES on 13 June 1996. That committee has met twice and advises me on general policy matters concerning the service. It is composed of representatives of the Departments of Enterprise and Employment, the Taoiseach, Finance, Social Welfare, Education, the Environment and Office of the Tánaiste, FÁS, ADM Ltd., IBEC, ISME, ICTU, the INOU and the 14 LES areas.
