Vol. 471 No. 2

Written Answers. - MOT Testing.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

124 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment if he will defer MOT testing on motor vehicles until the year 2000 in view of the fact that it is the general view that 1998 is too early and that this scheme should be phased in. [20583/96]

EU Directive 91/328/EEC of 21 June 1991 requires that Ireland must commence the roadworthiness testing of private cars in 1998. To meet the requirements of the Directive, it is proposed to phase in such testing, with older cars being tested in 1998 and with all cars over four years old being tested by the end of 1999.
