Question:156 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí to be recruited in 1997; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20509/96]
The number of gardaí recruited in each of the years from 1990 to 1996 is as shown in the following table:

A total of 600 trainees are scheduled to be admitted to the Garda college in 1997. The original plan had been to take on 350 in 1997, but that number was increased by 250 under the Government's anti-crime package announced last July. The package also provided for the intake of 150 additional recruits in 1996, and that addition is reflected in the table.
