Vol. 471 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

165 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the fact that people on community employment schemes are not entitled to a family income supplement in spite of the fact that their status is that of a worker due to the fact that since April 1996, they pay A rate contributions and are working a minimum of 20 hours per week; if he will reconsider their entitlement to a family income supplement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20612/96]

Family income supplement as currently structured and targeted is not an appropriate mechanism for improving the income of community employment workers. The level of allowances payable to community employment workers is a matter for the Department of Enterprise and Employment.
