Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Safety Council.

Noel Ahern

Question:

124 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if the National Safety Council is under his control; if he will give details of the recent research study carried out in respect of the work and effectiveness of the council; if he will give a summary of this report's findings; the action, if any, which will be taken on foot of this report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23347/96]

The National Safety Council is a corporate body established under the Local Government (Corporate Bodies) Act, 1971, and operating under the aegis of my Department.

In August 1994, the council was requested to seek an independent evaluation of the effectiveness of its road safety campaigns. The council engaged consultants to carry out this study and submitted a report to me in February this year. The report took a generally positive review of the council's road safety campaigns and made recommendations in relation to matters such as the need for market research, ongoing campaign evaluation and strategic long-term planning. These recommendations are being acted on by the council.
