Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Community Centres Funding.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

148 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education whether she will provide funding for the Tyholland community centre, County Monaghan; and if so, when. [23096/96]

Grants under this scheme have recently been allocated and all available funds are now committed to these existing projects. In view of the relatively limited funds available for allocation and the very large number of applications received, I regret it was not possible to include this project for grant assistance on this occasion. My Department is prepared to reconsider an application from Tyholland community centre in the event of further funding becoming available in 1997.

Question:

149 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education the amount of funding available to her Department or to the agencies under the aegis of her Department for recreation and community facilities; the source of such funding; the amount allocated to date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23097/96]

My Department administers the recreational facilities scheme and the major facilities scheme under the sports capital programme. Grants are allocated under these schemes for recreation and community facilities.

An amount of £7.4 million, which included £1.4 million brought forward from 1995, was available in 1996 for allocation to projects under the programme. Of this amount, £6.706 million has been allocated to date.

Sums of £5 million and £1 million were provided in the 1996 Estimates from the national lottery and the Exchequer, respectively, to meet claims for payment in respect of grant allocations in 1996 and in previous years.
