Vol. 472 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pharmaceutical Industry Employment.

Ivor Callely

Question:

29 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment whether any issues have been brought to his attention which may interfere with the number of people who are employed in the pharmaceutical/drug industry in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23027/96]

As part of ongoing contact, the pharmaceutical industry here has brought to my attention in recent months a number of issues which could have an impact on employment in the future. These issues, which are being examined in my Department and elsewhere, include the future tax environment for industry, environmental concerns such as waste disposal facilities, and trade-pricing of pharmaceutical products in the context of the European Single Market.

In recent years, investment by overseas firms in pharmaceutical green field projects and expansions has been substantial and is estimated at over £900 million since 1990. The pharmaceutical industry employs about 10,000 people i.e. over 50 per cent above the 1990 level, and exports £4 billion per annum, the bulk of production, and contributed over £150 million in corporation tax last year. The industrial development agencies continue to promote actively the development of the pharmaceutical sector which provides high quality sustainable employment.
