Question:

256 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the basis of EU approval for the two Luas lines; if this approval is on the basis that the northside line will proceed in the next phase of EU structural funds whether Ireland or the Dublin region qualifies for structural funds or not and that a solemn commitment has been given by the Government that work will be done even if the Dublin region does not qualify; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I refer to the reply to Question No. 2 of 24 October 1996, Official Report columns 1226-1229 which sets out the basis of the agreement with the European Commissioner for Regional Policy in relation to the implementation of light rail lines to Tallaght, Dundrum and Ballymun.
